Food, Drugs & Supplements
It is not the job of government to protect us from ourselves. And generally, laws and regulations which purport to protect the public from unscrupulous merchants actually protect large commercial interests from competition. This is especially true where the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is concerned. Virtually everything they do is designed to help large pharmaceutical and agricultural concerns at the expense of the public, small farms and small business.
Presently Congress is poised to reauthorize the Farm Bill. Two amendments of particular interest are proposes to this "must pass" legislation. The first, by Senator Patrick Leahy, is an effort to restrict access to dietary supplements by creating excessive criminal penalties that will be abused by FDA in its efforts to destroy competition to pharmaceutical drugs. It must be stopped. In fact, it already had been stopped last year, but Senator Leahy, a tool of the pharmaceutical cartel, has resurrected it as a proposed amendment to this year's Farm Bill.
The second amendment, by Senator Rand Paul, is to stop the draconian attacks by FDA against interstate raw milk sales. This effort by FDA is just more of the same destruction of small business on behalf of large businesses that do not like the competition. It also restricts freedom of choice for the great number of Americans who prefer raw milk to pasteurized milk. This amendment must pass. New Jersey
Education
Education in New Jersey has been made more difficult and expensive, primarily due to the relationship between the teachers' unions and the state government. Although Governor Chris Christie has begun to rein in bureaucratic excesses, much more needs to be done. One proposal is the Opportunity Scholarship Act (OSA) which is bill A2828 in the NJ Assembly and bill S1779 in the NJ Senate. This is not a panacea, but a step in the right direction.
